And the Winner is………….

I am going to open this forum to “guesses” as to Obama will pick as a running mate.  I know this is a presumptive post about Obama getting the nomination (which is becoming clearer all the time), but I wanted to ask the question even though I know people don’t like to respond to this type of thing on a Blog.  Anyway, I’ll kick it off.  My best guess is WES CLARK for all the obvious reasons and the cover he could provide when Obama unilaterally withdraws the troops from the Middle East.  This is of course in my opinion very likely if the “brokers” at the convention don’t force an unholy matrimony between Obama and HRc, provided that Obama doesn’t have enough elected delegates to win without the brokers.  Now it is your turn……………….

    Obama / Clark
    McCain / Sanford

M2…………..I have been hearing of Mark Sanford being touted for this position lately and you may be right here. He certanially qualifies under my personal matrix. For McCain to sell it though he needs to publically announce that Sanford will have a strong role in the government like Cheney especially in the area of economic input. I could also live with Kemp…… :) …….I for one believe the “conversion” in McCain about taxes (via Kemp) but what I am not CONFIDENT of is the degree of political capital he is willing to expend to extend the tax breaks (not to serve the rich alone, but to keep the working class working and the 401-k and IRA’s worth anything for the forthcoming retirement of baby boomers). We have big problems apart from the politics of envy otherwise……steve

P.S. B-T-W I checked the inclusive list (1062) of comments (other than my own) from visitors to NSL and did a search on Clark and you didn’t have previous refrence to Clark as a VP candidate, but I will have to give the first heard on NSL award to Erston who commented on my Top Ten Quotes of the Year post about Obama selecting Clark as VP for Credibility, something I had forgotten myself, so cudos to Erston……..steve

Sanford is an early 50’s guy… McCain / Kemp is an old timer ticket.
    That needs to be considered.
41 went Quayle, 43 went Cheney (that whole balance thing)…

I’ve been panting for Clark since jump… Maybe through email with you?
Or maybe never in regards to our dialogue?

Kemp / Sanford would serve your cause so much better than McCain / Sanford!
(Kemp is the Right wings Bill Bradley though, interested in affecting policy
backstage after testing the waters in years past & being above it all at this point…)

M2………….I know, and offer Kemp as an option on the ticket only in a toungue-in-cheek fashion. I know he wouldn’t do it, isn’t in the age group to appeal to people (notwithstanding McCain), but his views in office would be my dream, with the possible exception to his slightly more liberal perspective on immigration and the border….steve

I don’t see Hillary and Obama on the same ticket. It’s now or never
for both of them - there is no upside to being the other ’s VP. I’ll stick
with Clark - thanks for the cudos- I’ll pan fry them and serve them with some fava beans and a nice chianti. Personal favorite for McCain ticket
is John Kasich. Great record in DC but out of there long enough so that
he doesn’t have baggage from this century. Of course, the same people who got made when I cut up and reversed a Dole/Kemp bumper sticker would be mad at my Kasich/McCain sticker. Given McCain’s age, I could probably get away with a McCain ‘08 Kasich09 sticker.

Erston……..good one, but if we are going to write the ticket with McCain 08/Kasich 09 sticker, we might as well call it McCain 08/Sanford 09 (or even Jack Kemp, or a dozen others if we get them in 12 months. I can hide out in the Caymans that long)………steve

I like what I’ve heard about Sanford, but Kasich might help put Ohio
    back into play in November.

Oh my, you think he’ll go with Clark? That could be strange. I can’t see it, since he seems to really be appealing to the antiwar crowd. Maybe. Honestly, I was thinking John Edwards - they are equally shallow and smarmy and good looking.
    WC

WC……….Actually Clark has been aligned with the “anti-war” crowd on the “Bush Wars” as opposed to the “Clinton Wars”…..steve

  6. M2 on February 27th, 2008

Just so that I have an idea as to how your “shallow & smarmy” meter is calibrated…. Bush / Cheney?

Clark has made his feelings on the war more than clear, which is probably why we’ve suggested that an Obama / Clark ticket could be a possibility…

    & “antiwar crowd”?
Like this crowd is some sort of minority?

M2……….your’re correct here, the term Antiwar Crowd loses its meaning in this discussion. It is a matter of choosing which war is good (Kosovo) and which war is bad (Iraq/Afghanistan). I guess if you are doing it on an unprovoked basis and it has nothing to do with National Security it is ok even if it is “pre-emptive” not withstanding if you are also killing innocent civilians, women and childeren along the way. But what the heck at least they wern’t defending Christians or Jews, which would have turned the left against even the Kosovo war ……..steve

Let me get this straight, you’re criticizing me for using the term smarmy and shallow about Obama and Edwards and then you use it for Bush/Cheney? Weird.

Sorry, I didn’t know anti war crowd was an uncool thing to say. And yeah, you’re right - Clark does align himself against the war unless/until the subject of military know how comes up then he’s a big ol’ soldier man.

All that aside, I can’t see Obama going with Clark - I just can’t see it. Sorry. Although, I also don’t have a clue who he or in the alternative Hillary would go with - or McCain for that matter either.

I have longed for an Obama/Clark ticket many years. However, as of late, I think the best compliment to Obama is Michael Bloomberg.

Hi William………cummon, at this point I’m ready to suggest the best compliment to Obams is Michael Moore. :) ……..steve

P.S. How many years? as in how many years has Obama been ready to be President of the United States?

John Kasich has the same reputation for independence as John McCain. The two men have the same sort of “straight talk” reputation. Kasich also has been a successful host of a television news program. He comes across on television as extremely sincere. Kasich as been a consistent conservative across the board. At 56, he is young enough to run for president after McCain and to serve two terms in office, even while possessing right now enough experience in government to be president.

Kasich is extremely popular in his home state of Ohio. Given the mess that Republicans in Ohio state government made, Kasich is probably the only Republican in America who could actually deliver Ohio to the Republican column. Given the Rasmussen electoral college state by state polls, Ohio is the lynchpin of the election. Right now it is “leans Democrat” although McCain leads Obama in Ohio (Kasich would expand that lead.) McCain also leads Obama in the other big swing state of Florida. If Republicans carry Ohio and Florida, and carry the “toss up” states of Missouri, Virginia, Colorado and Nevada then the election is won. I have always liked Kasich. I would like him best in the White House.

Vox………….Yes, John is one of the good ones. He was my congressperson for years…………..steve

May I change my pick? Didn’t foresee Clark peeing all
over his shoes on Face the Nation
