Hillary’s $100 Generosity (in theory)

Subtitle: “Let them eat cake.” Hillary and her entourage visited the Maid Rite Restaurant in Toledo, Iowa this past Thursday and ran up a $157 tab.  This tab was settled by a credit card of the campaign and the campaign has provided a receipt of the card charge to prove it.  What it doesn’t prove is that the $100 tip claimed by Clinton was ever made.

Anita Esterday a waitress at the restaurant that served Mrs. Clinton and her guest said she chatted and exchanged pleasantries with Mrs. Clinton and might even vote for her but that Mrs. Clinton failed to leave a tip.  Hillary even used the encounter in a campaign speech.  I suppose it was about the raw deal the working people are getting in this country with minimum wage or health care or something like that.  The campaign went in defense mode and insisted that a tip was left on the table for $100.  When Ms. Esterday said “why would I lie about not receiving a tip,” the campaign repeatedly said that “well we left the cash.”

This was somewhat of a change from their perspective that they understood the tip to have been added to the credit card.  The manager says that their card processor doesn’t automatically add a tip to any charge.  He also says that there was no cash tip left at the table at which Hillary was seated.  The manager stated that all of their waitresses are long term waitresses (25-30 years) and that there isn’t one that would pocket someone else’s tip.  This is an interesting story that leads to the following observations in my opinion:

  • Why would the campaign “presume” that a tip was added to their VISA” and if so presume it was $100 on a $157 tab?
  • Why would the campaign go out on fund raising trips and ask for your money to help finance HRc’s campaign and then squander it on over tipping?  (Would you want your campaign contribution going to excessive, showy and unnecessary tips that aren’t even expected?)
  • Why would anyone charging the bill put part of the charge on the card and rely on carrying around a wad of cash (i.e. $100) for tips?  If you have ever worked in the area of expense reporting in a business you know that split reporting of a single expense is not only not likely but practically unheard of.  I would also think that a political campaign covering expenses with “cash” would be a large faux pas that you could drive your truck through, with prior accusations of them handing out “walking around money” to supporters (i.e. cash with no audit trail).
  • Why wouldn’t the person handling the paperwork notice that the tab they signed for did or didn’t have a tip and that it was or wasn’t $100?

Later a campaign staffer apologized to Esterday and gave her a $20.00 bill and my question is where is that $100 that was avowed?  So their tip generosity was $100 (64%) when they could simply assert it, but when it came to actually taking their own money and paying it, it is only $20.00 (12.7%) which is substandard.  So this illustrates how HRc claims to be the champion of the “little people” but as it turns out she is the oppressor (I guess we can’t say she is the “man”).

Of course none of my conjecture is accurate, because what actually happened is Clinton stiffed the waitress and the rest is spin control amplified by increasing intensity of their lies which I believe is clear.  MORE

It is amazing that they would lie so transparently instead of just saying, “Wow, I can’t believe we forgot to tip her! We’re so sorry!” That might have been a lie, but at least from their perspective it would have been a better lie.

Neil……….Yep, and probably her attitude is that they can have a lifelong story to tell that they served HRc her meal. Not everyone gets to be a servant to HRc and they should be thankful……..steve

Omg who gives a crap whether someone tips or not. Last time I checked, it’s not required to tip. I’m tired of these greedy waitresses trying to act like they are so deserving of all these tips. Hillary Clinton is our only hope to take back America and get it under control. God help us all if someone else wins. I got $35 in the bank that says Hillary is the best candidate. What about you? I didn’t think so.

Dear Vote For: …………. I find you very humorous. Here is a hint, it isn’t about the tip, it is about HRc continuous lies and makeover to attract to some special voting block. Not that it isn’t working, take you for example. And if that nonsense $35 challenge is a bet, I call you and raise you on it and match a $1,000 bet in escrow (with my or your lawyer) on the outcome (I’ll even take the side that HRc loses, just to call you on your “I didn’t think so” zinger). Otherwise I don’t expect to hear from you again. You just fired you best shot and it was a blank. And how did you come to hate waitresses so much since your candidate tries to APPEAR to be the champion of the little people? ………steve

    Steve / NSL… Really?

& love that you keep banging away with that lower case c (such brilliant nuance hahaha). Has that been mandated or did you come up with that yourself? Because I think you have something there… They using lower case c’s on townhall? What about “read my lips moment”, that caught on yet?

Go enjoy your weekend… Kite surf with Ann Coulter or something (do republicans kite surf? Probably too John Kerry? Okay so go do something macho like deep sea fishing or maybe shark wrestling?), a great opportunity to put your heads together & come up with more great innuendo anyway… Your party needs you!

Just having a little fun because I don’t know what else to do with this post?
Yeah that Hillary, what a sham! The small things sure can tell you alot…
    - Hows that?

Actually, I’m surprised your not happy with how well she’s towing Cheney’s militarity aggressive line towards Iran?

M2….Well where do I start. First the lower case c is my coin. Just a matter truth keeping. I haven’t read but one article from Townhall this year. Can’t even remember when or what. Second, Yes I believe I have first use of the Read My Lips Moment in that context, but no takers yet that I’ve seen, isn’t that a shame? Iran? Do you ever get even a little scared that the Democrats may ignore our national security to a point of serious danger in order to get back at Bush 43?

Did you read that little girl up there from “Vote for Hillary Online?” She is calling me out over a $35 bet (I think). Her attitude against the waitress seem to put her right square amid the HRc camp. No windsurfing with Ann this week. :) B-T-W I think I stood in line next to Adam Clayton for a Cheesburger at “Clematis by Night” this past Thursday here in West Palm. No I didn’t bother him (and he was alone)….steve

Yeah not really worthy of a response but you obliged because you’re a pro…
Can’t figure if she’s trying to use humor? Can’t figure if the $35 in the bank was her way of saying the economy is for crap? Can’t figure if the waitress comment was satire? Can’t figure why I’m even addressing her post? Except as an excuse to banter with you, I figure…

who gives a crap whether someone tips or not. Last time I checked, it’s not required to tip.

Having actually worked for tips before, I care. However, as was pointed out, the point was what that may say about character and the facade of actually caring about “the little people”. No, it’s not required to tip, If the service is decent I suppose it’s cheaper to just skate by that little annoying tip thing.

I’m tired of these greedy waitresses trying to act like they are so deserving of all these tips.

You’re tired of it? I didn’t realize it was such a widespread problem. “all these tips”?:) Yeah those greedy waitresses are gettin thier grubby little paws on undeserved fortunes. Jerks. They know we have to go out to eat to eat and then they soak us for those big undeserved tips.

Hillary Clinton is our only hope to take back America and get it under control.

“Get it under control”. Exactly the concern. Is that the echo of an iron-shod boot I hear?

The $35 thing must be a crack about the “Bush economy” or something, right?

    Hi Steve,

Well, obviously as has been proven by the coverage of this incident by the liberal press, Hillary expects that any mistake she makes will be covered up to the point where it never existed. Really, how else could someone with Travel Gate, that thing about her abnormally good commodity trading ability, and her initial bomb at trying to socialize our health care system even dream of running for President? With just a little luck though, she’ll still get the nomination, A notoriously evil woman just has to be easier to beat than a well spoken black man with no record at all.

    the Grit

Grit….they are jumping on you over that well spoken comment. I know you sense of satire and that it wasn’t a personal slur but a stick back on Biden’s comment:

you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy’

but different people take things differently. You are absolutely right where the left will try and amplify every faux pas of the right with the compliant media propagating it and the left will try and hide every faux pas of their own, again with the compliance of the media. Biden’s comment has faded from the news. If Giuliani or a Republican front runner had said the same thing it would still be in the dialogue………steve

this sounded like a clip from the o’reilly factor…which isn’t a bad thing, as i will admit to enjoying him from time to time:0)

i don’t get it though- the whole thing. i don’t get the stupidity on their part and i don’t get the political implications. i am naive. i know that. i still believe that not everything has a hidden agenda. i hate to have my feel-good, rainbows & sunshine bubble busted.

Heidi Jo……….It is great to have you back…..M2 is probably right it is much to do about nothing (the underlying issue), but I take exception on the matter of their “spin” machine and proclivity to say anything and do anything to cause Americans to believe something other than the truth. These people (Clinton Camp) are driven by lies, ego, meglomania, polls, personal advancement, etc, etc. They have clearly proven that they are prepared to play games on the war to advance their cause. You basically have a 60’s radical/liberal that is trying to “manage” her bonafides to the point she can just get her hands on the steering wheel. You basically can’t presume a single thing she says is true. I have said before that I find other Democratic Presidential candidates even more distasteful than Hillary, but none more dishonest. Sort of like that question plant during a stump speech. As it turns out there is a whole binder of questions with tab sections for catagorizing the asker, like “College Student,” and as it turns out it is multiple questioners positioned in the room at multiple events, but of course Hillary doesn’t know anything about it and they are sorry…….steve

    Nice… Go getem’ David Duke!

& Heidi Jo, something went kooky with a tip… HUGE news & a VERY hidden agenda bordering on conspiracy…
    Bubble busted?

    The M2

M2……I have learned the hard way that America is interested in making something out of “nothing.” I remember where the week before the election in 2000 Bush had a 6-7 point lead over Gore and then bam it was released that Bush had been picked up 20 years earlier for driving while under the influence. What tipped this off? He was driving too slow. It is irrelevant that Bush had previously admitted his prior drinking problem. It didn’t even matter that he hadn’t had a drink in 17 years. What did matter was Gotcha! In the fall out of that Bush had a razor thin electoral victory. I have even heard you comment on Bush’s libations if my memory is operating correctly. All this is unfortunate, but not nearly as duplicitous as Hillary turning a diner stop in to a campaign speech about the “ordinary” people yet she can’t even walk her own talk. This is another “read my lips” moment……….. :) steve

  15. matt on November 14th, 2007

though i will most likely vote for a gop, i am unsure what to make fo the well spoken blackman comment. is it just stating the obvious, or a sublte comment regarding race? upon perusing the grits websites, i see alot of satire, irony and sarcasm, but not sure how this fits into the context of the original post.

i am sure i am in the minority here when i say that obama’s lack of washington experience is a plus in my book. i know steve will pounce on me for the lefts spending agenda, but i truely want a regime change, and if that means we get a guy who is lacking in track record, that is ok by my book. i just wish obama was more convincing on his military front because i bet bush will tactically take on iranian nuclear outposts. the next pres will inherite a quagmire almost as drama filled as the one bush got back in his first term.

Matt………..I posted my comment on Grits “well spoken” comment above on Grits block. I really hope you don’t get sucked into the D’s agenda of tax increases. As we have discussed, though the economy is strong, it is fragile due to high oil prices, low dollar value (which are interrelated) and a natural aging of the recovery, I really fear that the Democrat’s tax policy (as articulated in the debates) will increase taxes by a trillion dollars (I’ve read the estimates) over base line (and no that kind of money doesn’t come just at the expense of the very rich or even the rich).

It would even take a hard core Democrat to see that as a stimulus to the economy and not a sure fire way to kill it. We can’t let that happen. Even Hillary stated that she has a Million ideas, but we can’t afford them all. Truth is we can’t afford probably any…….steve

  16. matt on November 14th, 2007

not convinced on the tax agenda thing by the left or the rights fascination with something that might or might not happen. more concerned with spending side. the regime change has to do with getting back to governing for the people. i dont like the concept of tax increases. dont really know if it will fly in congress regardless of the pres. sadly, the 2010 fiscal year is approaching fast and if nothing is done taxes will increase regardless of which side gets 1600 penn ave.

the race comment was just an odd one for me regarding the context of the original post. i weekly visit the grit’s sites and find irony, satire and humor laced with sarcasm so i know the author is not a bad guy. just seemd out of context to me. also, for other readers ouside steve and m2. .. my wife is african american and when our first child is due next year, realities about race that were never on my radar are now more obvious. no offense to anyone who does not know, nor is that relevant outside of the fact my radar is more more pronounced to things i never considered due to my life cirumstances. not saying i am more pc than others, just ended up falling for a lady that was from a differnt race. i am sure all the readers here can relate regardless of ethnicity or life circumstances.

Matt…….I think the tax thing is even clearer than the spending thing with the Democrats. They have all stated it and Rangle has promised it. Yes, they are trying to play out the clock on the current tax reduction to avoid the personal responsibility for that increase, but they have asserted additional taxes as well.

The point of Gritts “stick back” on Biden (I believe) was related to this post on the basis of the fact that the “mainstream media” didn’t cover this issue (those like me had to) and have basically given her another pass like they gave Biden. And then he chimes in with true Gritt character by using the same kind of example from the current field of candidates camp. I think it is tipped off by this opening line of his:

Well, obviously as has been proven by the coverage of this incident by the liberal press, Hillary expects that any mistake she makes will be covered up to the point where it never existed.

And……..if you are a regular reader of Gritt’s you know that this is a method he uses usually on many topics (largely GW - not Bush) quite effectively.

And to know Quenetta is to love Quenetta, but you know that…..steve

M2………no ears growing out of nose nor trouble as far as I know, but a brilliant engineer in this case working (or worked-forget if she is still there for a leading jet engine manufacturer or maybe I guess now a world reknown research institute) and well read on Christian Apologetics in my opinion. She seems to know off hand some arcane and complex research I have done in some areas in the past and we had a great discussion about DAN: 9:24-27 and maybe we ganged up on Matt a bit.

Matt, may you & yours raise a well spoken black man or woman!
Still shocks me that they exist & supposedly eat in restaurants with forks & knives … & order off the menue without cussing, rapping or pulling guns on each other? Can Q******* confirm this?

  20. the Grit on November 14th, 2007

    Hi Matt,

It was a reference to the Bidon quote, but it was also a comment on how dangerous an opponent Obama could be in a general election, as compared to, say, Al Sharpton, who was the last African-American candidate to vie for the Democrat nomination, if memory serves. Besides, I see nothing wrong with stating the obvious, and Obama is definitely dark skinned and is definitely has a talent for oratory. Thus, I was able to cram several layers of meaning into one short sentence, which I enjoyed greatly.

As to matters of racial tension and your family, much good luck with the surprisingly numerous idiots who just won’t let the subject drop. Still, the future outlook in that area is good, as we don’t seem to have any young replacements for Sharpton, Jackson, and their pale counterparts. (fingers crossed for luck) On the other hand, there’s plenty to be afraid of with a young one even without racial considerations. Allow me to recommend making whatever sacrifices are needed to send her to good private schools. My personal experience is that this eases many of the fears a father is bound to have. Oh, and apply NOW! Some of the best schools are obnoxious over their popularity, but they’re popular for a reason.

On a further note about racism, I often feel like I’m the only person on the planet who honestly doesn’t care what a person’s skin color is. Well, except for those slime green beasties in the SF movies, but I’m sure that, if we had a drink or two and a chance to talk, I’d get past that. Of course, my wife would never allow me to get to know the green girls on Star Trek, so that epidermal tone will have to remain a mystery in regards to my irrational reaction to it. For that matter, as long as you don’t think God (s) is telling you to kill me, force me to convert, or sell me something, I have no religious bias.

Further, I’m most happy that you enjoy our blog. While the Brit and I greatly enjoy the chance to express ourselves and have some fun , if no one noticed it then the bloom would be off the rose. Read all you want, we’ll write more.

    Hi M2,

My, where to start? Ah, the Bidon quote will do. How, logically, can it be construed as a racial insult to accurately describe a person when making a complement? Is it somehow implied that it’s surprising for a black man to speak English properly? If so, then it shouldn’t be. Admittedly, here in the Memphis area, well spoken blacks are somewhat rare, but so are well spoken whites, as our public education system really, really sucks. I suspect this is why I tend to notice and be impressed with well spoken people, which includes Obama. Mind you, I’m not impressed with what he says, but with how he says it. Compared to Hillary, he makes every word that exits his mouth sound like he’s been waiting to say it for years, all the while spending every waking moment contemplating, checking, and rechecking the truth and wisdom it contains.

From a political point of view, this is a dangerous talent in an opponent. Combined with his lack of a political record, this makes Hillary the most desirable candidate if one wants a Republican to win.

As to quotation marks, sorry. I figured that story was in the media enough that everyone would be familiar with it. Dang, I’m just glad I didn’t bother to include the “clean” part of the quote.

As to Hillary being evil, no satire there. Truly, she is evil. Don’t you read my antiChrist updates?

    Great post, Steve.

For $157, I would leave about $30-$40, depending on the service and the nature of the bill (i.e. if it’s $100 for wine and $50 for food, I don’t much feel like tipping the waitress $30 to use a corkscrew).

If you want to be very generous, $50 would be reasonable. When you start getting over 30%, the tip looks like you are just showing off (unless there is exceptional service and a low bill for some reason - i.e. leaving before the entrees are served).

With Neil. Why not just say, “Whoops!” and give her $30?

    -M2

  25. the Grit on November 16th, 2007

    Hi M2,

If I selected party guests on the basis of skin color, then I’d be a racist. Besides, I didn’t say that I’m colorblind, just that I don’t jump to conclusions about people based on their skin tone. However, such things matter greatly to many people, so it would be difficult to function in society without taking their feelings into consideration. This would be particularly important at a party since, as host, one must strive to make all of the guests comfortable. I wouldn’t, for instance, invite Klan members AND members of the Nation of Islam, well, at least without making them go through a metal detector and hiring several large bouncers. Also, I would definitely not serve on the good china.

Actually, it’s getting right difficult to plan a good party these days, what with all the different dietary requirements people are insisting on. Pork is off the menu if Muslims or observant Jews are invited. If Indians are on the guest list serving cow may insult them if they’re strict Hindus. Peanuts are a big no-no. Then, one must play it safe and have enough vegetarian dishes on hand to feed the Vegans who may show up. It even complicates the drink menu, since Muslims, Baptists, and, if memory serves, Mormons won’t consume alcoholic beverages so, instead of simply putting out a selection of wines and having some beer in the fridge, it’s now necessary to concoct some form of fancy fruit punch to supplement the assortment of sodas also chilling in the fridge. This also adds extra work to your hosting duties, as the guests who don’t apply the social lubricant of alcohol often need more help getting into the party spirit enough to mix well with strangers. Still, it’s the duty of a gentleman to put the comfort of others ahead of his own, so I try to work around all this. What’s life without a challenge?

If, however, you must count skin color, and other measures of minority status, in one’s social circle, and you’ll just have to take my word for it as I would never publish pictures of my friends on the web out of my own interests, our last Thanksgiving dinner included two Indians, two Native Americans, a Polish Jew who escaped the Nazis, two Vietnam war vets, a small person, and an elderly gay couple who have no family left. I mention family only as a segue into the fact that this group was assembled because, even though we have no close kin left in this area, it is almost a law of nature that I’m going to cook far too much food on Thanksgiving, and, as it turned out, we knew this many people who didn’t have extended families to celebrate with, so we shared. Oh, and there were also 5 extra dogs brought by guests, bringing the number of canines in the house up to 9. All in all, it was, in my opinion, our best Thanksgiving ever, even though, by voice vote, the shrimp and crab meat casserole was better than the turkey.

Sorry, by the way, for taunting you into replying. It’s just that around here, people get shot in such discussions, so the opportunity to continue the conversation was too tempting to pass on.

As to Hillary, being evil myself, I will enjoy watching her run for the money. I won’t enjoy watching her win, but the struggle should be most entertaining.
