Brilliant ?
DEBKAfile is reporting with a breaking exclusive that the US is planning to put an airbase in Lebanon 22 miles from the Syrian border. This would represent the first return of U.S. military to Lebanon since they were withdrawn by Reagan in 1983. Some of you that are familiar with Debka may scoff at their reporting, but after following their reports for a number of years now I would say that their accuracy is much, much higher than is popularly reported.
This could be the “check and mate” regarding Syria’s strong arm pressure on Lebanon, occasionally removing a head of state as they may desire. This also would take Hezbollah off balance and jeopardize their military supply lines. This could be just what the doctor ordered. I wonder if this has anything to do with Sec. Rice’s meeting with Syria’s Prime Minister Saniora in June or the pledge of $770 million of U.S. Aid in January. We’ll just have to stay tuned for further developments in this area.

is giving 770 million a bribe into obedience? or will this end in a disaster for us? last time i caught the evening news, bush and co. were calling syria a rogue nation. i wish that bush was more consistent in his use of our currency and the words coming out of his mouth. do you think that things like this will backfire on the gop so close to choosing a new president.
Matt………Most all foreign aid could be described as a bribe if you break it down. It is there to help, but under a structure that empowers the United States on the world stage. I don’t think the placing of a base there is a disaster at all. In fact if you call attacking Syria or Iran a potential disaster, this base might serve to avoid that. Granted this raises the ante, but ultimately Syria and Iran must back down or there needs to be military action and this may just provoke their compliance (along with their knowledge that their much vaunted air defense system from Russia is now proven to be worse than worthless since they are relying on something that not only doesn’t work, but provides cover for incursions). One thing worse that war with Syria and Iran is enabling them to go Nuclear and dictate the peace settlements in the future. Don’t look for the type of military situation in Iran that we have had in Iraq. I would say that war in this sense would be more like Kosovo. We accomplish our goals simply by reducing and taking out their WMD capability from the air (with a little clandestine ground actions for Command and Control purposes)…….steve
just reread my post and i am now not sure who is getting the money. i hope it is to the lebanese and the meeting with the syrians is jsut diplomacy. hope my confusion is not confusing to the readers. though i am still concerned with the bush effect on decision 08.
Matt……this does reference aid to Lebanon, certainly not Syria……….steve
I hope it is accurate. Yes, it is brilliant, if true.
