A Little Insight to Character Here….

romney.jpg This is not an endorsement for or against the candidacy of Republican Mitt Romney.  However, this Iowa frontrunner, (seems like the 2nd tier candidates are dominating there), demonstrated some interesting leadership in this 1996 incident.  I think it might be “good reading” if you want to take the time.  Little insight to character here……….. I guess he has at least one mans vote.

By Ronald Kessler Mitt Romney was faced with a crisis in July 1996. The 14-year-old daughter of Robert Gay, a partner in Romney’s new venture capital firm, Bain Capital, had disappeared. As it turned out, she had attended a rave party in New York City and had become high on ecstasy. Three days later, her distraught father had no idea where she was.

Romney took immediate action. He closed down the entire firm and asked all 30 partners and employees to fly to New York to try to find Gay’s daughter.

Romney set up a command center in a conference room at the LaGuardia Marriott just outside Manhattan. He hired a private detective firm to assist with the search and established a toll-free number for tips, coordinating the effort with the New York City Police Department, but he still wasn’t satisfied. He raced through his Rolodex and called everyone Bain did business with in New York. He asked them to help his company find their friend’s missing daughter.

The company’s accounting firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers, and its law firm, put up posters on street poles with a photo of the missing teenager. Cashiers at Duane Reade Pharmacies, which was owned by Bain Capital, put fliers in the bag of each shopper.

Romney and others from the Bain Capital posse trudged through every part of New York, even scouring Central Park, and talked with everyone they could - prostitutes, drug addicts - anyone who may have seen her. They also made rounds at the local nightclubs at 3 a.m., hoping someone somewhere could identify her.

The same day the Romney team came to New York, the hunt made the evening news. Television cameras showed photos of the girl and video of investment banker types prowling through Central Park.

The next day, a teenage boy she was with phoned in. He asked if there was a reward. But the boy got nervous and quickly hung up. Luckily, the police traced the call to a home in Montville Township, N.J.

Gay’s daughter, when they found her in the basement of that home, was shivering through detox after a massive dose of ecstasy. Doctors later told Gay that he was indeed fortunate - his daughter probably would not have lasted another day.

“It was the most amazing thing, and I’ll never forget this to the day I die,” Gay says, adding of Romney’s intervention, “I’m not sure we would have gotten her back without him.”

I hadn’t heard about this. There are quite a few things to like about Romney. I think the media is over-playing the Christian vs. Mormon thing because they don’t like his (generally) conservative views. I think many Christians realize that his stances on particular issues and his general governing style are more important with respect to whom they should vote for.

Neil……..so true and you know we aren’t going to get a card carrying Christian from the left side of the asile nor half of the right side……..steve

That’s the kind of take charge leadership I would like to see during a war time presidency.

bd……….good point here. Can you vision Obama or Hillary as a war time commander in chief. Answer………no. But that isn’t a slam. If you asked them they would say the same and quickly add they are going to end the war (win lose or draw)…….steve

You know, this is just one of many things I’ve been liking about Romney lately. I’m still not throwing my hat in the ring for any one particular candidate (besides Duncan Hunter, of course :)), but Romney isn’t looking too bad.

The only thing I really don’t like about him is that although he is against cloning and embryonic stem cell research, he is in favor of researching on the abandoned embryos already in existence - left over from in vitro, etc. I should think that he could be lobbied away from this position if presented with the right information about embryo adoption (e.g. Snowflake babies) etc, but I still couldn’t vote for him knowing he would approve of killing 11,000 tiny little humans.

tieki rae………….Thanks for the info on Romney. Like I said I am not prepared to endorse, but I thought this was a worthy view of his character. If it comes down to Romney or most any of the probable Democrats I’d vote for him, believing that in General he would be better and in particular on abortion he would still be better than all the Democrats combined……….steve

I’m a Romney fan. Not necessarily my first choice, but I happily voted for him in the MA gubenatorial election. Shortly thereafter, he and his sons were at their lakeside home when they saw someone drowning and saved him.

Bridget………..Well maybe he is the real deal then…………..steve

Is this all real? Or like some sort of Saturday night Live skit?

I saw Edwards help an old man cross the street & his youngest child put a tithe in the bucket at church…
Also saw Huckabee adopt 46 embryonic stem cells at my cousins hospital…

    Seriously though, just playing…

I actually think that if he wasn’t Mormon, he’d be your lock. I’ve mentioned this to you (Steve) in the past. More a testament to pickens being slim (on both sides obviously) though, IMO…

M2……..contrary to what you may think, religion per se isn’t a prerequisite for my vote. You have to play the cards you are dealt and even some Christians wouldn’t get my vote. I have hired enough of them to know that some (not a rarity) are lightweights when it comes to doing anything, not to mention what they are supposed to do. Anyway, I thought you have pinpointed my philosophical masters, is it the Neocons, Republicans, Christian Coalition, or Wall Street? ……..steve

When I say “your lock” I mean the republican party & not necessarily your lock. :-) I definitely think you’re deeper than that…

I’d say you’re a Christian first & foremost but while stuck here on Earth, a Wall Street Republican with a Worldview similar to the old conservative (neocon) one of Irving Krystol…
It’s definitely a compliment. The original neocons were a serious minority & very brilliant.
I don’t like the dummied down version at all… In fact one of the newer models just left the building (for now) running from his subpoena (among other things) I suppose? Politics is sport for him though so look for his head to pop back up with Fred Thompson as he continues to fail at re-making Americas version. Looking for heavy duty puppet strings somewhere no doubt… Home Depot? Fred’s a big guy.
