Urgent Global Warming Pronouncement from the United Nations

ban-ki-moon.jpg Ban Ki-moon (Surname Ban) the new (Jan 1, 2007) UN Secretary General (former South Korean Foreign Minister) replacing Kofi Annan in an opt-ed. bomb in the Washington Post this week (HERE) stated that the Darfur conflict began as an eco-crisis stemming in part from climate change.  He has stated that he believes that the warm Indian Ocean created monsoon cycle shifts that caused people to fight over food.

NSL has been advised that NASA has examined the science behind his claim and used 18 climate models from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from it 4th annual assessment report and showed that greenhouse gases played little or no role in the 1950-99 observed drying in Africa.  This didn’t seem to temper what in its wake can only be described as the Secretary-General’s political announcement.

Although this study smacks at the conventional wisdom as well as the preferred political spin of some, many don’t want to put forth that China and Russia are propping up the Khartoum government with oil subsidies in the Darfur region for military weapons and not food as promised.  NSL believes that attacking “Global Warming” as the culprit in this may be because is an easy way to attack by proxy the United States whereby the liberal take on all this is that most of the man made Global Warming in the world is a result of policies and practice of the United States.

Additionally, the media does not want to open up that the 200-300,000 deaths and 2,000,000 displaced civilians is a 21 year war of Christians and animists in the south of Sudan against Muslims, not even Arab Muslims, but Muslims who somewhat object to the “Arabization” and Islamification of the country that is moving civilians from oils fields that the Chinese are developing, and as it has been said to me, it is ironic that in this case a new breed of Islamo-fascism is growing.

It is likely that global warming will become a Red Herring that will consistently be raised to blame on everything that is perceived as a problem so that more government and taxes can be achieved.  Global Warming aside, this has more to do with pseudo-science and pseudo-economics than anything else.

the article is interesting, but hidden behind jthe jargon could be the diplomatic tightrope washington has to play with internatinal politics.

recently, we had high level meeting with china and their representative, madame wu yi, held pretty firm that china will not let the yuan appreciate to help ease the import-export trade gap therby making chinese goods more globally competitive. a strong yuan is not in their best interests financially. also, their humanitarian record is pretty suspect. from toy trains, to their lax policy on intelluctual property, i think that the chinese need to be called on their cosy relationship with the khartoom governemnt. do you think the un has the fortitude or currency to do that?

Matt, my general view is the UN does not have the fortitude to do that and since they have demonstrated this time and again (recently in S. Lebanon) they no longer have the currency either. My opinion is that this has become and organization limited to being a soap box for the 3rd world countries to beat up on Uncle Sam (at our expense).

You are right about the strong yuan, this needs to float on the open market. This is just another example of the problem with centrally planned economies. This makes them (unfairly) competetive worldwide and improves their foreign currency reserves, but there is a cost to their own people, but whoever accused them of treating even their own people as a priority? This seems like something we could and should deal with and it wouldn’t be a strike at free trade when it is in reality a strike agains unfair trade. ….. steve
